Book Review – New Release – “Crush” by Mae Wood

I was given the opportunity to read and review Crush, a brand-new release by Mae Wood. It was a quick, fairly enjoyable read, but it had some strikes against it for me from the start. This was not the author’s fault, it’s just that there are certain tropes that I enjoy and some that I don’t. This one happened to have several that I do not like to read!

First, here’s the official blurb:

I don’t read blurbs for books written by authors I like. I trust them to tell a good story, and I don’t really care that much what the story is about. Unfortunately, this is not a book I would have chosen if it were not written by an author I really like, for a couple of very basic reasons.

First, there’s the Insta-Love. I’m not a fan. It’s one of the reasons I don’t like to read short stories. I like it when the couple has time to develop their relationship. Call me old fashioned, but I’m not a fan of people jumping into sex when they hardly know each other. And I’m even less of a fan when they’re almost immediately “he was IT for me.” Please. They just met.

Second, and this is a big one, the heroine was 22. 22! I haven’t been 22 in a VERY long time, and while I do like to read stories about people of all ages, I just couldn’t relate to Kenzie. She was just finishing college. I have a daughter who is just a couple of years younger, so I usually stay away from books whose main characters are so young. (To be fair, Ryan is 30).

Third, this story also has a “forbidden love” aspect to it. It’s not spoiler-y to say that Kenzie is one of Ryan’s clients, and he could jeopardize his job by getting involved with her. To me, this would not be worth it and I could not see myself making that choice for any reason.

If you would like to read a wonderful – but very different – book by this author, I’d recommend Genealogy. It was one of my favorite books from 2018! You can read my review here.

Book Review: Insatiable by Melanie Harlow, Cloverleigh Farms book 3

Several years ago, Melanie Harlow was one of the first authors that I fell in love with when I started reading romance again after a long hiatus. Her book Some Sort of Love, from the Happy Crazy Love series, is still one of my favorite books. Melanie Harlow is from Michigan, like me, and I enjoy the references to places that I’m familiar with in each of her books.

INSATIABLE AN BT

I enjoy this newer Cloverleigh Farms series. I’ve read books 2 & 3, both of which have couples with a complicated history. In book 3, Insatiable, Noah and Meg have been best friends since childhood. He’s always been her protector, and even saved her life once. Although he has had more romantic feelings for her in the past, he’d never acted on them because he didn’t want to ruin the wonderful friendship that they had.

When Meg comes back to town for her sister’s wedding, after years away, she asks him why he never made a move on her…and you can guess what happens next!

One of the things I loved about Some Sort of Love was that hero, Levi, was the single dad of a son who was on the autism spectrum. As a mom of a special needs child, I don’t find families of special needs children represented much in books of any genre, so it is refreshing to find them in several of Melanie Harlow’s books. In this story, Noah’s twin brother, Asher, has cerebral palsy, which is what my son has. You get to read about the way his family cares for him, the blessings and the struggles, and also the doubts that his mom has in allowing other people to help care for him. I could definitely relate to that!

Melanie Harlow is GREAT at writing sexy times, and she never resorts to a stupid misunderstanding when it’s time for the Moment of Conflict, which makes her far above several of the authors I’ve read lately! I’m looking forward to reading the other books in this series: Irresistible, which is book 1, and the remaining books that I assume are coming, since there are 5 sisters in the Sawyer family, and April and Sylvia’s stories have yet to be told!

Book Review: Man Cuffed, Man Hands book 4, by Sarina Bowen & Tanya Eby

I was very excited to read this book, and unfortunately, I was disappointed. Now, I will say that I was in a grumpy place romantically when I read this book, so I wasn’t really in the right mood for it, so that may color my review a bit.

It was very funny, as all the Man Hands books are, but not as funny as the others in the series. It was an interesting concept: Hot Cop who doesn’t date convinces Hot Neighbor, who is an actress, to be his date for his sister’s wedding. It seemed like it would be a Fake Relationship story, which I would have LOVED, but it didn’t really end up being that at all. There wasn’t a lot of sexual tension, either, because they were like NOPE, not going to have sex; let’s banter about how much we want to have sex; oh, okay, never mind, that rule isn’t that important, let’s have lots of sex. I did really like the banter, because they weren’t hiding how much they would have wanted to have sex if Mac didn’t have his Thou Shalt Not Sleep with Thy Neighbor rule.

There was some interesting family drama, which was unlike I’d ever read before, which caused a few enjoyable surprises. The thing I liked most about the book was all the references to the state of Michigan; being a Michigander, myself, I loved seeing familiar things mentioned.

All in all, I did not like this book as much as I wanted to like it. It was funny and well-written, and worth a read, but it just didn’t live up to my expectations. That, however, will not stop me from reading any and all Sarina Bowen & Tanya Eby books in the future because I’ve pretty much loved everything I’ve ever read from these talented ladies.
